Holding an interview can be almost as nerve wracking as being the one who’s being interviewed!
Especially when it’s an absolute must for growing your business successfully long term.
One of the reasons hiring and interview is difficult is because the more people you interview, the harder it becomes to choose. And the more senior the position you need filled, the more important it becomes that you hire the right person.
After all, the success of your business will be built on the efforts of this person, as well as your existing team.
So to help you make an informed decision, we’ve compiled some of the most surefire ways to consider who might be the right candidate for you.
Nothing Is More Important Than Choosing The Right Person To Hire
Choosing who to hire for your business is crucial because that person will be directly responsible – via their contribution – to what your company will look like five years from now.
It’s a rule of business that you won’t be able to grow your company without the support of a trusted team behind you.
Now, choosing someone who’s goals don’t align with yours could slow down that process.
But on the flipside, choosing the right person for the job could yield incredible results: you may find your business growing faster than you ever thought possible!
The following questions won’t tell you exactly who is the right choice – that’s up to you – but their answers will help you better understand how suitable the interviewee is for joining your team.
#1 The Tried & True: What Is Their Experience?
This is the number #1 question to ask in every interview.
Knowing the experience of your prospective new hire will give you a very clear indication of whether they are capable of doing what needs to be done.
It’s also a great way to learn how much salary they may be expecting, and how much you’re willing to offer. Salaries are best tied to an employee’s experience, at least initially.
Just remember that it’s possible for quite a few interviewees to have great knowledge and qualifications… but experience is really what separates the good from the great.
You’ll need to know that you can leave this person alone to do their job and do it well – and there’s no better indicator of this than previous experience in a similar role.
It will give you the confidence to hand over responsibility to them while you focus on growing and leading your business.
#2 Onto Their Future: What Is Their Willingness To Upskill & Take On More Responsibility
Is your interviewee willing to take on additional responsibility outside of their role in the future? Are they willing to learn new skills?
These questions will help you understand if the person you’re interviewing can grow beyond their role, help build your business by taking workload off you, and potentially even step up to a management position.
Being willing to take on more responsibility will also save you further interviews down the track.
#3 How Would They Tackle Problems Unique To Your Business?
Your interviewee may have experience in a similar field; but how are they going to solve the challenges specific to your company?
This is an effective way to understand how this person could fit into your business. Anybody can talk smoothly about their current job. But asking them to solve a challenge they may not have faced yet will bring out their creativity.
This unique challenge could be something that is specific to your industry, niche, business, or your audience.
It’s a great opportunity for prospective hires to step up and distinguish themselves. It also shows you ahead of time if their version of a solution suits your own work style well enough.
Don’t forget to do a cost v benefit analysis of such a big decision
Don’t forget to do a cost v benefit analysis of such a big decision, and map out how this will affect your cashflow in the short and medium terms. Often initially the cost outweighs the benefit, but if you can map out a way to cover those initial costs, the longer term gains could be significant.
